Family Reunification in Europe: How to Bring Your Family Legally

Family Reunification in Europe: How to Bring Your Family Legally

For thousands of foreign workers in Europe, the hardest part is being separated from family. Missing your child's first steps through a video call. Celebrating anniversaries over WhatsApp.

The good news: family reunification is a legal right in most European countries. Once established with stable employment, you can bring your spouse and children to live with you legally.

Who Qualifies?

  • Your spouse (legally married)
  • Children under 18 (biological or legally adopted)
  • In some cases, dependent parents

Unmarried partners, siblings, and adult children generally do not qualify.

General Requirements

1. Valid Residence and Work Permit

Typically held for at least one year before applying.

2. Stable Income

  • Spouse only: 100-120% of minimum wage
  • Spouse + child: 130-150% of minimum wage
  • Proof: employment contracts, pay slips (3-6 months)

3. Adequate Housing

Rental agreement in your name, meeting minimum space requirements (10-15 sqm per person).

4. Health Insurance

Must cover family members. In Poland, ZUS employment insurance can extend to dependents.

5. Clean Criminal Record

For you and adult family members.

Poland

Timeline: 3-6 months. Submit at the Voivodeship Office; family applies for visa at Polish consulate.

Documents: Your permit and passport, marriage certificate (apostilled, sworn translation), children's birth certificates, proof of income (3 months pay slips), proof of housing, health insurance, passport photos.

After arrival: Family receives temporary residence permits. Children can enroll in public school. Spouse can work.

Albania

Timeline: 2-4 months. Generally faster than Poland.

Key difference: Income thresholds are lower. Housing inspections may be conducted. Spouse needs separate work permit.

Serbia

Timeline: 2-5 months. Relatively straightforward process.

Key difference: Can apply after 6 months of continuous employment. Spouse can apply for work permit immediately.

  • Marriage certificate (apostilled, translated)
  • Birth certificates (apostilled, translated)
